[15/02/2008] MOSS2007 and IRM – Step by Step Part 2

Categories: Office System 2007, SharePoint, IRM, Security

In the last post we set up our IRM server to use within our SharePoint environment. In this post we will configure the SharePoint Server to use our new IRM Server. To start with we need to run the install of the client software for IRM. The file "WindowsRightsManagementServicesSP2-KB917275-Client-ENU-x86.exe" needs to be run before we can configure our SharePoint environment. Follow through the wizard:

Simply let it install after that. Once it has installed we need to configure Central Administration to talk to our IRM Server. Launch Central Administration, then select the Operations tab and then select "Information Rights Management" option from the "Security Configuration" category.

When associating IRM with SharePoint you get three options:

  1. Do not use IRM on this server
  2. Use the default RMS Server specified in the Active Directory
  3. Use this RMS Server

In most cases your IRM server will have an endpoint held within the Active Directory, so will choose this option and press OK. If this fails then this will be because the endpoint does not exist within the Active Directory. To fix this go back to the IRM Server and access the "Global Administration" page and select the "RMS Service Connection Point" option.

Then simply press the "Register URL" option to add this to the Active Directory.

Once it is added we can then re-run the process within SharePoint to connect to the default RMS Server specified within the Active Directory. If you now get the following error; this will be because the "ServerCertifcation" web service does not have the correct permissions set.

To resolve this you will need to log into the IRM Server and open up IIS.

The location we need to open up is the physical file location for the web service shown above.

The security for the "ServerCertifcation.asmx" file needs to be changed to allow "Authenticated Users" to connect and use the IRM server through SharePoint.

Once this is completed it is best to check you can access the web services from the SharePoint server. This can be done by navigating to the following URL:

http://{IRMServer}/_wmcs/Certifcation/ServerCertification.asmx

If the security is correct it should load as shown below:

If it does then we can then rerun the process in the SharePoint and it should now connect with no errors. Now we have a fully connected IRM and SharePoint Solution. In the next post we will look at how to use this within a SharePoint site.
